MARSY SANTOS
The Full Story
Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic,
in 1995, Marsy Santos's artistic path began in
an environment of limited resources, where
she developed an early sense of resilience
and creativity. With the support of her parents,
she earned a full scholarship to the
prestigious Altos de Chavón School of Art and
Design, an affiliate of Parsons School of
Design, graduating with a BFA in 2015.
During her studies, Marsy began to develop
her core artistic themes, exploring identity,
loss, societal expectations, and unfulfilled
dreams. She developed the concept of
"seeing faces as buildings"—a metaphor for
the comfort zones we inhabit. Her work uses symbolic colors to reflect decay and stagnation,
while her thick, textured brushstrokes convey a sense of weight and immobility.
After graduation, Marsy spent a decade working in the film industry as a Props Maker and
Lead Scenic Artist, Set dresser, and Art Director assisting. This experience, while
unconventional, was a period of significant artistic growth. It provided her with the opportunity
to learn from master scenic artists globally, developing a deep appreciation for texture and
detail that now informs her painting practice.
In 2021, Marsy moved to Atlanta and, now with the shift in the film industry in Atlanta , was
able to commit to her fine art career full-time. She has spent the past four years reconnecting
with her artistic voice, allowing her global experiences to influence her work. The techniques
she mastered for film sets now bring her memories of people and places to life on canvas,
often blurring the lines between her subjects and the spaces they inhabit. As she establishes
her place within Atlanta's vibrant art community.
